Modern Management

A great thanks to Mandi Sir for inculcating habit of writing blogs. Now it became a part of my routine to update the new things in my blog and moreover, a natural interest is being created to write a new post as soon as we learn new concepts from Mandi Sir.
After interesting discussions on Newton's Craddle and Mandi in the last class, my expectations on Mandi Sir were very high for next class. It is needless to say whether Mandi Sir has reached my expectations in next class. Of course Guys!! Mandi Sir has done it again with his unique teaching methodology.
I know by now you are very curious to know about happenings of class:)
As soon as Sir entered the class, every one of us took our seats on the floor before black board with
much curiosity. Adding to our excitement, Sir had given us some building blocks ramdomly. As everyone was trying to have a close look at building block, Sir has started the discussion about importance of Modern Management :(
The idea here is to learn the difference between Modern Management and Conventional or Craft Management. Since we are in Mandi Sir's Class, we got the advantage of learning the concept with a simple task of building a tower using building blocks in class.

Game Begins Now!!! As soon as the announcement is made by the Sir that interested person to build the tower can come on the dias, everyone was ready to grab the opportunity to play with toys of Mandi Sir :). Before starting the activity, Sir asked each of us to expect the height of tower in terms of no of blocks. The expected range of height varied between 15 - 30. Now there is a twist in the tale. To our surprise, there was bidding and person who wins bidding will get a chance to build the tower. (I thank Mandi sir as this is the first bidding experience for me!!!). Finally, one of our class mates who paid Rs 500/- and winner of bidding got opportunity to build the tower.
The person was successful to build the tower with 22 blocks and his expectation before the start of activity was 18 blocks. Now it is clearly understood that performance of person exceeded his expectations.
Now there was bidding for another activity. Three persons are identified based on bidding process. Of these three persons:
  1. one person is a CEO of company
  2. Other is a Manager in company
  3. Last one is a worker in company
Activity is worker will be blind folded and Manager has to give instructions to blind folded worker to build the tower. CEO doesn't has much to do here. Expectations of the group was 22 blocks. Perfect instructions of Manager and More perfect implementation of instructions of manager by the blind folded worker made something unexpected real.
"That is total height of tower was 25 blocks which is more that the expected value"
Modern Management follows second process to increase the productivity by making unusual things possible. So take away from this activity is the differences between Craft Management and Modern Management that are mentioned below:

 Craft Management :
  • Most Satisfying
  • Gives Pride
  • Decision Making
  • Think and Implement
Modern Management :
  • More Productive
  • No Pride
  • Just Taking Instructions
  •  No chance for Decision Making.
Above differences are made with perspective of a ground level worker. This clearly indicates that in Modern Management, a separate layer is made only for the purpose of 'DECIDING'. We all here would be part of such layer in future.

In Modern Management, like a Blind Folded Person, a ground level person's job is just to do the work and doesn't get an opportunity to decide or take decisions on the work. Managers will have complete freedom to take decisions and guide workers to complete work. The objective of Modern Management is to completely remove Middle Level Management so that there are only two segment of employees in the industry. One segment is Higher Level to take decisions and frame policies and other segment is Lower Level to implement ideas of Higher Level.

We also listed down some differences between 'One Person's (1P's)' work and 'More than One Person's ('1P's)' work.

2 hours of time just passed away without any realization and Mandi Sir walked away with Building Blocks. Hope you have enjoyed reading my post and please pass comments if any after reading my blog.

First Flavour of Managment Fundas

I never thought of reading someone's blog till today and creating a blog of my own seems very unusual to me but thanks to our Mandi sir for making us inculcate this habit.

Coming to know about Mandi sir is like a series of surprises to me. Sudden gesture of Mandi sir in class (Surprise # 1) - Yesterday, we were actually confused by sudden and silent entry of Mandi sir in class as he came instead of other faculty.

Immediately I was checking a piece of paper lying in the bag....you are right. It is our class time table. Never carried a time table in my bag hitherto and thanks to NITIE for issuing a copy of time table :). Then very next moment when I looked at our Mandi sir, he was sitting on the floor beneath black board (Surprise # 2).

Then I thought, our Mandi sir would teach us meditation and yoga that helps to keep our selves relaxed (don't know...heard of people saying abt yoga) in our busy life in NITIE. As I was busy with my own thoughts, suddenly every one was asked to sit down before black board (Surprise # 3). By now I confirmed with my friends that he is a faculty.

Mandi sir gave a formal introduction of himself and my enthusiam suddenly vanished when it is confirmed that he is no more a meditation teacher ( missed golden chance to have peaceful sleep in class). Now our Mandi sir took out some beautiful education toys from bag(Surprise # 4). To be honest, neither I didn't play with such toys in my childhood nor I saw such things in market. In simple words, they are unique, very impressive and no one can resist the temptation to play with such toys. I was very impressed with two toys that are shown to us.

They are : Newton's Cradle and A Ball with world map over it

Firstly I was completely blank to frame an idea about Newton's Cradle. Later in course of time got to know that toy really imparts a great lesson to us. That is 'One should have determination to help our friends by giving them required support as much as possible to place themselves on par with oneself even though if one loose their energy/momentum'.

Later, Mandi sir gave us an overview of Mandi, its importance to MBA student and probable dates of conducting Mandi this year. Last time it was conducted in the year 2011 and hope this year we won't miss fun. In Mandi 2010, bollywood actress Preethi Jhangiani was the chief guest and you can have look at video of her that shows her addressing NITIE students. Hoping a bollywood actress this year also come to our campus in Mandi flag off ceremony.

Last minutes of class are spent by taking pictures of Mandi sir while interacting with us.(hmm..couldn't get good shot of Mandi sir).

At the end of class, I felt that Mandi would definitely give us very important knowledge of business like,

# Ability to judge the customer by looking at body language of customer.
# Ability to change interaction based on the mood of customer.
# Ability to elevate our product.
# Ability to develop niche skills to sell product in market.

I definitely hope that I learn above skillset and may be much more in the most awaited season of Mandi 2013.
